Microsoft Postpones Launch of Low-Cost Windows in India
Development snags delay the release of Windows XP Starter Edition.
Launch of the low-cost version of Microsoft Windows XP in India will be delayed
to June from its original release timeframe of the first quarter due to some
localization issues, according to the Associated Press, Tuesday.
Ranjivjit Singh, marketing and business operations director of Microsoft India,
told reporters in Bangalore, “We are still working on providing Indian
language capability” and added “You can’t underestimate the
huge development work involved.”
Microsoft Windows XP Starter Edition, a stripped-down version of the Windows
XP operating system targeted for first-time home PC users in developing technology
markets, is already being sold in Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand, with launch
plans for Russia as well. With a 90 percent market share of operating systems
sold in the country, India is the largest of the five markets Microsoft is pursuing.
The Indian version of XP Starter Edition will initially only support Hindi,
India’s dominant language among its 18 official ones. Support for nine
other languages will be added later.
No price has yet been announced for the operating system.
