From the business wires this week: data recovery software for Windows File Systems, a .NET tool for creating application skins, and a near-indestructible tablet PC.

Just as Microsoft’s next-generation Xbox 360 gaming console’s interchangeable
faceplates will let users customize the look of their Xboxes, DirectSkin
4.5 from Stardock enables .NET Framework-based
developers create unique GUIs for their applications. The developing tool integrates
third-party software and can lock in one look for the application or allow users
to select from different skins. DirectSkin supports all major Microsoft development
environments, including Visual Basic, C++, .NET 2003 and Visual C# .NET 2003.

Next time you need to send e-mail or wrap up a PowerPoint presentation underwater
or while falling from a height of 3 feet, consider Ajax Systems’
RPT-6010 tablet PC. Though it doesn’t tout the
bulletproof polycarbonate plastic of Apple’s iBook, the RPT-6010 does
feature a waterproof and dustproof aluminum-alloy casing and can withstand shock
of 40Gs and vibration of 10Gs. The 6.4-pound (with battery) tablet PC is powered
by a mobile Intel Pentium III 866MHz processor and has a 10.4-inch 800x600 resolution
TFT LCD touch screen, 128MB RAM, a 20GB hard drive and 32MB VRAM. http://www.ajaxsys.com
PCMag.com upgraded its folder synchronization utility
program with WMatch 3. New features allow users to
synch source and target directories bi-directionally or strictly source to target,
and to schedule unattended synchronizations with the new Synch Scheduler. WMatch
3 can also compare a local or network directory to an FTP directory and save
directory listings as Microsoft Excel, HTML or text files. http://www.go.pcmag.com/wmatch
