From the business wires this week: a centralized console for deploying security patches, solutions that notify users of vulnerabilities in need of patching, and automated inventory software.
Gravity Storm Software announced the release of
Service Pack Manager
(SPM) 7.1, which now offers admins the ability to set up a centralized approval
process for security patches and deploying them to secondary network servers
for clients using Windows NT/2000/XP/2003. SPM 7.1 also features enhancements
in its ability to manage and secure Windows Firewall.

SMS Expert released SMS Companion, a solution that load balances
SMS deployments across a network. Features include Wake on LAN, scalability

PatchAdvisor, Inc. released its new suite of vulnerability intelligence
solutions. PA Flash! is a Web-based tool targeted at small businesses,
which notifies users by e-mail of new threats to their systems based on the
operating systems and applications they use. PA Alert! is a granular
and configurable enterprise vulnerability alert service for more than 13,000
applications, operating systems, security systems and network equipment. PA
Source delivers an XML-formatted feed that provides access to PatchAdvisor’s

The latest version of iInventory, an automated inventory software for
Windows, Mac and Linux, was released. Version 7.1 features remote on-demand
audit of Windows computers; remote detection of network assests via NetBIOS,
Active Directory or IP address; and automatic data import. iInventroy 7.1 supports
Windows XP/2000 and has database options for Microsoft Access, MSDE and SQL

VXL Instruments Ltd. launched the successor to its InControl 4
remote management software: XLmanage. With it, admins can manage from a single
console all the VXL thin clients using Windows CE, Windows XP Embedded and Gio
Linux—which it can detect automatically—across a LAN, WAN or NAT

enables USB drives to be used as physical logon keys for Microsoft Windows 2000/XP/2003.
Users can automatically login by simply plugging in a USB flash drive configured
with Rohos Welcome 1.2 and lock the computer down by unplugging it. A personal

Lasso Logic unveiled its disk-based data protection software Lasso
CDP. Designed for small and medium-sized businesses in mind, the tapeless
backup system backs up data, both locally and remotely, and automatically whenever
there is new or changed information. Lasso CDP can be administered remotely
